Kazunori Koutsuka 木工房玄 高塚和則

Japanese wood artisan Kazunori Koutsuka(高塚和則) transforms simple pieces of timber into works that carry the quiet rhythm of nature. Working from his studio in Tochigi Prefecture, he handcrafts each piece from raw logs of cherry, walnut, and other native woods — carefully selected for their grain, tone, and inner life.

His signature technique, known as “Kodachi carving,” involves engraving fine, vertical lines or tree-like patterns in a soft, rhythmic sequence. This method evokes the image of a small grove (kodachi) swaying gently in the wind. Each carving is done freehand, without guides or repetition, allowing the natural flow of the wood to guide his movements.

Rather than hiding the imperfections of the material, Koutsuka embraces them — celebrating the organic marks, knots, and subtle color shifts that make every piece unique. Over time, his wooden works develop a warm amber patina, deepening in texture and tone through years of use.

He finishes each object with natural oils instead of synthetic coatings, letting the wood breathe and age gracefully. Every item — from trays and coasters to serving boards — reflects his belief that craft should live in harmony with nature, growing more beautiful with time and touch.
