Toshiyuki Haramura 原村俊之

Toshiyuki Haramura creates ceramics that blend everyday function with quiet beauty. Based in Saitama, Japan, he draws inspiration from traditional Arita and Hizen porcelain, interpreting their refined forms and translucent glazes with a softer, more natural sensibility suited to modern living.

Working together with his wife, Haramura uses a technique known as washi dyeing — painting motifs onto washi paper, then transferring them onto the clay surface before glazing. This process gives his work a distinct, hand-crafted warmth, where each piece carries gentle traces of fading color and the rhythm of the brush. His designs often feature birds, horses, and bears, rendered with simplicity and charm, evoking scenes of quiet life and play.

Every vessel is shaped by hand and finished with subtle glaze variations — pinholes, faint iron specks, or the soft bleeding of pigment — all embraced as part of its living texture. Guided by the ideas of “simple, basic, and standard,” Haramura aims to make tableware that feels calm, familiar, and enduring — pieces that grow more beautiful through daily use.
