YOJIRO KIMURA 木村 容二郎
He is a Japanese ceramic artist born in Osaka in 1983, now living and working in Naha, Okinawa. His work is known for its free, playful spirit and a visual language rooted in everyday life. Drawing inspiration from ordinary objects and natural forms he encounters daily—such as peanuts, water plants, paper cuttings, and drifting clouds—Kimura transforms familiar elements into lively geometric motifs. He believes that each vessel carries the thoughts and state of mind from the day it was made, much like a personal diary, and for him, the most important principle in both life and making is to respect and cherish the present moment. Fired using wood-firing techniques, his ceramics feature warm, soft textures marked by natural ash and flame, evoking the sea breeze and sunlight of Okinawa in an abstract, understated way. Clean lines, rhythmic patterns, and carefully balanced colors give his work a sense of movement within simplicity, making each piece quietly expressive yet easy to live with. Rooted in functional pottery, Kimura’s cups and plates are designed to bring joy and energy to everyday rituals—from hand-brewed coffee to a simple tea moment—embodying a thoughtful balance of craftsmanship, storytelling, and modern living.
